Mast bands perform a similar structural role, acting as reinforcing collars that provide both strength to the wooden mast and a mounting surface for yard trusses and other fittings. Britannia strips, typically crafted from a soft, lead-based alloy, are highly valued for their malleability and realism; they are used to simulate the decorative or functional metal cladding found on spars, rails, and gun ports, as they can be easily bent and cut to fit curved surfaces. Finally, mast boots—the protective canvas or leather coverings fitted at the point where a mast passes through the deck—serve the dual purpose of concealing the joint and preventing water infiltration in the prototype, while on a model, they provide a clean, professional transition between the mast and the deck planking. Together, these components bridge the gap between a mere wooden carving and an authentic, high-fidelity scale replica.
