The pintle and gudgeon assembly serves as the foundational hinge system for a ship’s rudder; the pintle is the pin attached to the rudder, which fits securely into the gudgeon, a socket mounted on the sternpost. This interlocking mechanism allows the rudder to pivot smoothly, providing the structural support and range of motion necessary for precise steering and directional control. While these components manage the ship’s path, the propeller provides the essential forward momentum.
By converting the rotational energy of the engine into thrust through its hydrodynamically shaped blades, the propeller acts as a screw that pushes against the water to move the vessel ahead or astern.
