Hawse Lips

Hawse lips, a critical component of a ship’s deck, serve multiple purposes that enhance vessel stability and maneuverability. Essentially, hawse lips are protective flanges extending from the bow, the front part of the ship, to the sides. These flanges serve as fenders, cushioning the ship when docked or in close proximity to other vessels or harbor structures.

During mooring operations, the lips also prevent wear and damage on the hull plating and frames from rubbing against mooring hardware and lines. Additionally, lips channel water and debris away from the hull when the ship navigates through congested waterways or docks.

By directing these elements clear of the hull, potential damage from debris impact or water surge is mitigated. In essence, hawse lips contribute to a ship’s overall safety and efficiency by enhancing stability, reducing damage potential, and facilitating safe docking and maneuvering operations.
