About 80′ Elco PT Boat: K1005

80′ Elco PT Boat | First Series, 1942. John Kennedy’s PT-109 is the one we all remember, but over 800 PT Boats were built. These sleek and deadly wooden boats served in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters.

The Elco PT Boat, also known as the Patrol Torpedo Boat, was a revolutionary naval vessel that played a crucial role during World War II. These boats were designed and manufactured by the Elco Naval Division of the Electric Boat Company, specifically for the US Navy. The PT boats were small, fast, and highly maneuverable, making them ideal for coastal operations and hit-and-run attacks. They were primarily used for patrol and escort duties, as well as engaging in offensive actions against enemy ships and shore installations.

The Elco PT Boat had a sleek and streamlined design, with a length of 80 feet and a beam of 20 feet. It was powered by three Packard 4M-2500 gasoline engines, which gave it a top speed of 41 knots. This impressive speed and agility made it difficult for enemy ships to target and gave the PT boat the advantage of surprise attacks. The boats were also equipped with a variety of armaments, including torpedoes, machine guns, and depth charges, making them a formidable force to reckon with.

Our kit, designed by author and model builder, Dr. Al Ross, portrays a typical 1942 80′ Elco PT Boat.

Because of the large number of very small parts and the delicate detailing required, this kit is recommended for intermediate to advanced builders. It should be determined in advance whether to use a gray paint scheme (European theater) or green camouflage (Pacific island hopping) because the construction method involves painting each sub-assembly before putting the whole boat together. It is important to note that some pictured items may have been built with optional items not included as part of standard kits, such as pedestals, bases, cases, paint, etc. If there are any questions about the contents of a particular kit, please contact Bluejacket.

About the Elco PT Boat

One of the most notable features of the Elco PT Boat was its ability to operate in shallow waters, thanks to its shallow draft. This allowed the boats to navigate through narrow channels and sneak up on enemy ships undetected. The PT boats were also equipped with advanced radar systems, which gave them an edge in detecting and tracking enemy vessels, especially at night.

The crews of the Elco PT Boats were highly trained and courageous individuals who risked their lives daily to carry out their missions. They were known for their bravery and quick thinking in the face of danger. The PT boats were often used in daring rescue missions, evacuating wounded soldiers and sailors from the front lines.

Despite their small size, the Elco PT Boats played a significant role in several critical events during World War II. They were instrumental in the Allied victory at the Battle of Guadalcanal, where they played a vital role in disrupting Japanese supply lines. They were also used in the famous PT boat rescue mission, where future US President John F. Kennedy commanded PT-109 and helped save the lives of his crew after their boat was sunk by a Japanese destroyer.

After the war, the Elco PT Boats continued to serve in various naval forces around the world, including the United States Coast Guard and the Royal Navy. They were also used in the Korean War and the Vietnam War, showcasing their versatility and durability.

In conclusion, the Elco PT Boat was a remarkable naval vessel that played a significant role in World War II and beyond. Its speed, agility, and advanced technology made it a formidable opponent, and its brave crews were instrumental in carrying out daring missions. The PT boats will always be remembered as an integral part of naval history and a symbol of courage and determination.
