U.S.S. Gearing, DD-710 | FRAM I, circa 1961. During the early 1960s, in the midst of the Cold War and the perceived threat from the Soviet nuclear armed submarines, the US Navy created a program to update the fleet to respond to this new threat. The update program was known as FRAM, Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization.
One of the first classes of destroyers to undergo the FRAM program was the Gearing class. Essentially, what was done was to totally redesign everything on the ship, from deck on up. To meet the new submarine threat, two entirely new weapon systems were a prime feature of FRAM 1. The first was DASH, Drone Anti-Submarine Helicopter (unmanned), which was designed to carry torpedoes. The second was ASROC, Anti-Submarine Rocket (rocket propelled torpedoes). Major deck modifications were required to accommodate these two new systems, including the elimination of one of the 5″ twin gun mounts and all of the 20 and 40mm anti-aircraft guns. Additionally, sophisticated electronics and radar were installed.
The USS Gearing DD-710 was a United States Navy Gearing-class destroyer that served during the Cold War and the Vietnam War. Commissioned in 1945, the Gearing was one of the largest and most advanced destroyers of its time. It was named after Rear Admiral Henry Chalfant Gearing, a distinguished naval officer who served in both World Wars.
Like Bluejacket’s WWII Gearing kit, this USS Gearing DD-710 kit is also not only absolutely historically correct, it employs the most modern kit building methods and materials, utilizing a carved solid hull, laser cut wood, etched brass, Britannia fittings, detailed instructions, and Al’s incredible plans. Because of the amazing amount of detail, this kit is recommended for very experienced model builders.

About the USS Gearing DD-710
The USS Gearing DD-710 was 390 feet long and had a beam of 40 feet, making it a formidable presence on the seas. It was powered by four General Electric steam turbines, which gave it a top speed of over 35 knots. This impressive speed allowed the Gearing to quickly respond to any threats that may have appeared on the horizon.
Equipped with the latest technology, the Gearing was armed with three 5-inch/38 caliber guns, six 21-inch torpedo tubes, and an array of anti-aircraft and anti-submarine weapons. It also had advanced radar and sonar systems, making it a highly capable and versatile vessel.
The Gearing played a crucial role in the Cold War, conducting patrols and surveillance missions in the Atlantic and Mediterranean regions. It also participated in various training exercises and served as an escort for aircraft carriers and other naval vessels.
In 1964, the Gearing was deployed to the Western Pacific as part of the United States Navy’s efforts in the Vietnam War. It played a vital role in providing gunfire support for ground troops and conducting search and rescue operations. The Gearing’s versatility was evident in its ability to adapt to the changing demands of the war, from patrolling the coastline to conducting naval bombardments.
Throughout its service, the Gearing received numerous accolades and commendations, including a Navy Unit Commendation for its actions during the Vietnam War. However, its most significant achievement was its role in the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. The Gearing was one of the naval vessels involved in the blockade of Cuba, preventing Soviet ships from delivering missiles to the island.
After nearly three decades of service, the Gearing was decommissioned in 1973. It had sailed over 600,000 nautical miles and participated in numerous operations and exercises during its time in service. Today, the Gearing is a museum ship, open to the public to explore and learn about its rich history and contributions to the United States Navy. It stands as a testament to the bravery and dedication of its crew, who served their country with honor and distinction aboard this remarkable vessel.
