USS Oregon (BB-3) | Pre-Dreadnought Indiana-Class Battleship. Oregon and her two sister ships were the first modern battleships built for the United States. The three Indiana-class ships were built as part of a modernization program aimed at strengthening the American fleet. Designed for short-range operations in defense of the United States, they featured a low freeboard and main battery of four 13-inch guns in a pair of turrets. Known as “McKinley’s Bulldog,” Oregon took part in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1898 where she contributed to the destruction of the Spanish squadron in Cuba.
