About USS Oregon (BB-3): K1114

USS Oregon (BB-3) | Pre-Dreadnought Indiana-Class Battleship. Oregon and her two sister ships were the first modern battleships built for the United States. The three Indiana-class ships were built as part of a modernization program aimed at strengthening the American fleet. Designed for short-range operations in defense of the United States, they featured a low freeboard and main battery of four 13-inch guns in a pair of turrets. Known as “McKinley’s Bulldog,” Oregon took part in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1898 where she contributed to the destruction of the Spanish squadron in Cuba.

The USS Oregon battleship holds a significant place in American naval history. Commissioned in 1896, it was one of the first modern battleships built by the United States Navy. Its construction was a response to the growing naval arms race between the major world powers at the time. The ship was named after the state of Oregon and was originally intended to serve as a symbol of American strength and power. The USS Oregon was known for its impressive size and firepower, measuring over 350 feet in length and carrying a main battery of four 13-inch guns. It also had a top speed of 17 knots, making it one of the fastest battleships of its time.
