Nantucket (LV 112) | Famous lightship of 1936. Before the era of modern aids to navigation, lightships played a crucial role as beacons and waypoints. Specifically designed for her lonely, rugged post sixty miles offshore, on the edge of Nantucket Shoals, LV 112 was built in 1936 and stationed to mark the beginning of the major ship channel into New York Harbor.

The Nantucket LV 112 Ship is a historic vessel that has played a crucial role in maritime history. Built in 1936, it was originally known as the ‘Lightship No. 112’ and was one of the last lightships to be commissioned by the United States Lighthouse Service. The ship was designed to serve as a floating lighthouse, stationed in various locations along the treacherous Atlantic coast to guide ships safely into port.

Our kit shows Nantucket as launched, with a tall stack for her steam boiler, which was changed in 1960 when she was converted to diesel. This is a dramatic, colorful model with many custom etched brass and Britannia fittings. About the Nantucket LV 112

The Nantucket LV 112 Ship was built to withstand harsh weather conditions and had a unique appearance with its red hull and iconic white light tower on the top deck. It was equipped with powerful foghorns, powerful spotlights, and a radio beacon to aid ships in low visibility. The ship was manned by a dedicated crew of 15 to 20 men who worked in shifts to ensure the light was always shining and the ship was running smoothly.

Throughout its years of service, the Nantucket LV 112 Ship was stationed in different locations including Nantucket Shoals, Pollock Rip, and Cross Rip. The ship was responsible for guiding countless ships safely through dangerous waters, preventing accidents and saving lives. Its presence was a symbol of hope for sailors and a reminder of the dangers of the sea.

During World War II, the Nantucket LV 112 Ship was temporarily painted gray and used as a lookout post for enemy submarines. It was also equipped with a deck gun for self-defense. After the war, the ship returned to its original purpose and continued to serve as a lightship until 1975 when it was decommissioned.

In 1985, the Nantucket LV 112 Ship was acquired by the United States Lightship Museum and underwent extensive restoration to return it to its former glory.
