Built in 1851, the America was originally known as the racing schooner ‘Yacht America’ and was commissioned by a syndicate of wealthy businessmen from New York. Its purpose was to compete in the Royal Yacht Squadron’s annual 100 Guinea Cup race, which later became known as the America’s Cup.
