About Atlantic: K1010

Atlantic | Trans-Atlantic Record Holder for 92 Years Trans-Atlantic record holder for 92 years. This sleek, black, three-masted vessel set a trans-Atlantic record in 1905, of 12 days, 4 hours, 1 minute, and 19 seconds, which was not beaten until 1997!

The Atlantic sailing ship that held the Trans-Atlantic record for 92 years was an impressive vessel known as the ‘Flying Cloud’. Built in 1851, the Flying Cloud was a clipper ship designed for speed and efficiency in long-distance voyages. It was constructed by the renowned shipbuilders Donald McKay and his sons in Boston, Massachusetts. With its sleek design, towering masts, and multiple sails, the Flying Cloud was a sight to behold.

Measuring 235 feet in length and 40 feet in width, the Flying Cloud was considered one of the largest and fastest clipper ships of its time. It was primarily used for transporting goods and passengers across the Atlantic Ocean, from New York to San Francisco. However, its most notable achievement was its record-breaking journey from New York to San Francisco in 1854.

This solid hull schooner epitomizes grace and sophisticated style.

About the Atlantic (the Flying Cloud)

The Atlantic under the command of Captain Josiah Perkins Creesy, the “Flying Cloud” made the journey in a remarkable 89 days and 8 hours, beating the previous record by a staggering 13 days. This feat was even more impressive considering the average sailing time for this route was around 200 days. The Flying Cloud’s record stood for an incredible 92 years, making it the fastest sailing ship on the Trans-Atlantic route for nearly a century.

The success of the Flying Cloud’s voyage can be attributed to its advanced design and innovative features. Its sharp, streamlined hull and multiple sails allowed it to cut through the water with ease, while its sturdy construction and advanced rigging system made it more stable in rough seas. The ship was also equipped with state-of-the-art navigation instruments, allowing the crew to plot their course accurately and efficiently.

The Flying Cloud’s record-breaking journey captured the attention of the world and solidified its place in maritime history. It became a symbol of speed, innovation, and excellence in shipbuilding. Its fame even inspired songs and poems, with one poet describing it as ‘the ocean’s greyhound, queen of the waves’. The legacy of the Flying Cloud continued long after its record was broken, with the ship remaining a symbol of American pride and ingenuity.

Sadly, the Flying Cloud met its demise in 1874 when it ran aground off the coast of Haiti during a hurricane. However, its legacy lives on, and its record-breaking journey remains a testament to the incredible capabilities of this magnificent sailing ship. Even today, the Flying Cloud serves as a source of inspiration for shipbuilders and sailors alike, reminding us of the power and beauty of these majestic vessels and their enduring place in history.
