About Bowdoin Arctic Exploring Ship: KLW128

Bowdoin | Famed Arctic explorer, 1921. Built in East Boothbay, ME, BOWDOIN made nearly 30 voyages to the ice-jammed waters of the Arctic, under the command of Admiral Donald MacMillan. Still sailing, at the Maine Maritime Academy, this sturdy schooner is a registered National Historic Landmark.

The Bowdoin is a historic vessel that has played a significant role in Arctic exploration.  The ship was originally designed and used as a supply vessel for Arctic expeditions. However, it is most famously known for its association with the renowned Arctic explorer, Donald B. MacMillan. MacMillan, who was an experienced and skilled explorer, used the Bowdoin for many of his expeditions to the Arctic. The ship was named after its primary benefactor, Donald B. MacMillan’s alma mater, Bowdoin College.

A skilled modeler will take great delight in building the Bowdoin Model kit. The Bowdoin is a plank on bulkhead kit.

About the Arctic exploring Ship Bowdoin

The Bowdoin is a sturdy and resilient wooden vessel, measuring 88 feet in length and 26 feet in width. It was specifically designed to withstand the harsh and icy conditions of the Arctic, with a reinforced hull and a powerful engine. This made it the perfect vessel for navigating through the treacherous Arctic waters and breaking through thick ice sheets.

Throughout its long and illustrious history, the Bowdoin has embarked on numerous expeditions to the Arctic, carrying scientists, researchers, and explorers. Its most notable expedition was the 1925-1927 voyage to the Arctic led by MacMillan, which covered over 6,000 miles and lasted for two years. This expedition was significant as it was the first to use radio communication to transmit information and photographs from the Arctic back to the United States.

The Bowdoin has also been a part of several scientific expeditions, collecting data and specimens from the Arctic for research purposes. It has also been used as a training vessel for aspiring Arctic explorers, providing them with hands-on experience in navigating through Arctic conditions.

Despite its age, the Bowdoin remains in excellent condition and is still used for expeditions and educational purposes. It has been designated as a National Historic Landmark and is currently owned and operated by the Maine Maritime Academy. The ship has been meticulously maintained and restored to its original condition, boasting the same wooden hull and rigging that it had in its early days.

The Bowdoin is not only a vessel of immense historical significance but also a symbol of resilience and perseverance. It has withstood the harsh Arctic conditions and has played a significant role in expanding our knowledge of this remote and unforgiving region. Its legacy continues to inspire future generations of explorers and serves as a reminder of the bravery and determination of those who have ventured into the Arctic on the Bowdoin.
