About Fannie A Gorham: K1016

Fannie A Gorham | Typical Maine coastal schooner. Launched in 1881 in Belfast, ME (just 8 miles from Bluejacket’s home in Searsport, the Gorham was built especially for the coastal trade, carrying lumber and other cargo from New England to southern ports. We have built a finished model of the Gorham for the grandson of her commanding captain when she was ‘lost at sea, with all hands.’

The Fannie A Gorham was a majestic ship that captured the hearts and imaginations of all who saw her. Built in 1874 by the renowned shipbuilders, Smith and Dimon, she was a masterpiece of naval engineering. The ship was named after the wife of Captain Frederick Gorham, who was a prominent figure in the maritime industry at the time. The Fannie A. Gorham was a three-masted wooden schooner with a length of 246 feet and a beam of 38 feet. She was a true beauty with her sleek, white hull and towering masts that reached towards the sky. The ship was equipped with the latest technology and advancements in sailing, making her one of the fastest and most efficient vessels of her time.

The Fannie A. Gorham model ship kit is a good model for the intermediate builder and, with her off-center main mast, centerboard, and shallow draft, is an unusual and interesting subject for any modeler. It is important to note that some pictured items may have been built with optional items not included as part of standard kits, such as pedestals, bases, cases, paint, etc. If there are any questions about the contents of a particular kit, please contact Bluejacket.

About the Fannie A. Gorham

The Fannie A. Gorham was a majestic ship that captured the hearts and imaginations of all who saw her.

But it wasn’t just her physical appearance that made the Fannie A. Gorham stand out among other ships. She had a rich and storied history that added to her charm and allure. The ship had sailed across the Atlantic Ocean countless times, carrying cargo and passengers between Europe and the United States. She had braved treacherous storms and crossed the equator multiple times, earning her the nickname ‘Queen of the Atlantic.’

The Fannie A. Gorham was not just a vessel for transportation, but also a luxurious floating hotel. On board, she had spacious cabins, elegant dining halls, and even a ballroom for entertainment. Passengers were treated to first-class amenities and impeccable service, making their journey across the seas a truly unforgettable experience.

The ship was also known for her famous passengers, including notable figures such as President Grover Cleveland and writer Mark Twain. It was said that Twain found inspiration for his novel, ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,’ while aboard the Fannie A. Gorham.

Sadly, the Fannie A. Gorham’s illustrious career came to an end in 1906 when she ran aground on the coast of Nova Scotia. The captain and crew were able to safely evacuate all passengers, but the ship was unable to be salvaged and was left to sink into the depths of the ocean.

Although she may have met a tragic end, the Fannie A. Gorham will forever be remembered as a symbol of elegance, innovation, and adventure. Her legacy lives on through stories and memories of those who were fortunate enough to witness her majesty firsthand. The ship will always hold a special place in the hearts of all who admire and appreciate the beauty and wonder of the sea.
