About Friendship Sloop Large: KLW115A

Friendship Sloop | The winning combination of seaworthiness, sail power, and elegant lines was developed in a type of sloop built in Friendship, Maine. Originally used to fish offshore on the Georges Banks, these classics have found popularity as small yachts.

A Friendship Sloop is a classic wooden sailing vessel that has been a beloved icon of New England for over a century. These ships were originally used for lobstering and fishing in the waters of Maine, but they have since become a popular choice for recreational sailors. With their distinctive design and rich history, Friendship Sloops have captured the hearts of many sailors and non-sailors alike.

Our Friendship sloops are based on a typical 1900 design, and are available in two sizes. Both kits are plank on bulkhead and contain many laser cut parts. These models can be easily detailed and personalized. Remember, in modeling, bigger is usually easier. It is important to note that some pictured items may have been built with optional items not included as part of standard kits, such as pedestals, bases, cases, paint, etc.

About a Friendship Sloop

The first thing that stands out about a Friendship Sloop is its elegant and sleek design. These ships are typically around 30 feet in length and have a narrow hull with a sharp bow and a wide beam. The hull is made of wood, usually cedar or pine, and is painted a deep red or black, giving the ship a striking appearance on the water. The mast is tall and slender, with a single sail that can be easily raised and lowered using a simple rigging system. The overall design of the Friendship Sloop is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, making it a true work of art on the water.

One of the most unique features of a Friendship Sloop is its shallow draft. This means that the ship can navigate through shallow waters, making it perfect for exploring the small coves and inlets of the Maine coast. This also allows for a smoother and more peaceful sailing experience, as the ship glides effortlessly through the water.

But what truly sets a Friendship Sloop apart is its rich history and the sense of community that surrounds it. These ships were originally built in the late 1800s by local shipbuilders in Maine, and were used for lobstering and fishing. However, as technology advanced, the Friendship Sloops were no longer needed for commercial purposes and many of them fell into disrepair. It wasn’t until the 1960s that a group of passionate sailors and historians began to restore these ships and bring them back to their former glory.

Today, the Friendship Sloop is not only a symbol of the maritime heritage of Maine, but also a beloved vessel for recreational sailing. It is often seen in regattas and races, where its speed and agility are put to the test. But beyond the sailing community, the Friendship Sloop has become a beloved part of the culture and identity of Maine. It represents a simpler time, when life revolved around the sea and the bonds of friendship and community were strong.

In addition to their historical and cultural significance, Friendship Sloops also have a special place in the hearts of their owners. Many sailors have formed strong bonds with their ships, spending countless hours tending to them and sailing on the open water. These ships have a unique personality and each one has its own stories and adventures to tell. For many, a Friendship Sloop is more than just a boat, it is a cherished friend.

In conclusion, a Friendship Sloop is more than just a sailing vessel. It is a work of art, a symbol of history and community, and a beloved companion for those who have the privilege of sailing on one. Its elegant design, shallow draft, and rich history make it a unique and treasured part of New England’s maritime heritage. Whether you are a sailor or simply an admirer of these beautiful ships, a Friendship Sloop is sure to capture your heart and leave a lasting impression.
