About Pirate Brig : K1048

Pirate Brig  | Avast ye lubbers! Bluejacket’s new model of a Pirate Brig is a great modern version of a very classic kit, first produced by Boucher (Bluejacket’s predecessor company) in the 1930’s.

A pirate brig is a type of ship that was commonly used by pirates during the Golden Age of Piracy in the 17th and 18th centuries. These ships were designed to be sleek, fast, and highly maneuverable, making them ideal for pirating activities such as raiding and looting. The typical brig was around 100 feet in length and could carry a crew of 80-100 men. Its narrow hull and shallow draft allowed it to sail into shallow waters and navigate through narrow channels, making it difficult for larger ships to pursue or attack.

A year or so ago, a gentleman brought an original, 1930’s kit to us and asked us to build it for him. The result was so successful that we decided to reintroduce this kit.

Our new Pirate Brig kit remains true to the original design, size and intent of our classic model, but utilizes the advances and techniques now available. There are totally redrawn plans and instructions, fittings made from lead free pewter, and many, many laser cut parts. This kit has been designed with the less experienced modeler in mind and is perfect for practicing your rigging skills.

Al Ross has created a discussion group for builders and prospective builders of the Pirate Brig.

About a Pirate Brig

The design of a pirate brig was also well-suited for surprise attacks. It was equipped with a large, square-rigged foremast and a smaller, lateen-rigged mainmast, giving it the ability to quickly change direction and catch its victims off guard. The sails were made of strong, durable canvas to withstand the harsh winds and weather conditions of the open sea.

The most iconic feature of a pirate brig was its black flag, also known as the Jolly Roger. This flag was flown to strike fear into the hearts of their targets and intimidate them into surrendering without a fight. The brig was also armed with cannons, which were used to fire at other ships or to defend against attacks.

Life on a pirate brig was not for the faint of heart. The crew members were a rough and diverse group, often consisting of sailors, former slaves, and criminals seeking adventure and fortune. They lived in cramped quarters below deck, with limited space for personal belongings and supplies. The captain of the ship held absolute authority and was responsible for making all decisions, including dividing loot and administering punishment. Disobedience or mutiny on a pirate brig could result in severe consequences, including being marooned on a deserted island.

Despite the dangers and challenges of life on a pirate brig, it was also a place of camaraderie and freedom. The crew members were united by their love of adventure and the promise of riches. They shared meals, stories, and songs, and worked together to navigate and maintain the ship. The lifestyle of a pirate was also appealing to many as it offered a sense of independence and rebellion against the strict societal norms of the time.
