About Smuggler: K1012

Smuggler | An 1877 Gloucester Schooner with a reputation of being the most beautiful schooner ever to “slip down the ways,”

An 1877 Gloucester Schooner is a remarkable vessel that was built during the height of the age of sail. This particular schooner was constructed in Gloucester, Massachusetts, a town known for its rich history in shipbuilding and fishing. The design and construction of this schooner were a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the shipbuilders of the time. The Gloucester Schooner was a two-masted, fore-and-aft rigged vessel, making it highly maneuverable and efficient for fishing and cargo transport. Its sleek design and large sails allowed it to navigate through the often treacherous waters of the North Atlantic with ease.

Smuggler is one of Bluejacket’s most popular models. A superb 96-page instruction manual by the renowned Erik Ronnberg, Jr., coupled with her large 1/4″ scale, and fine laminated basswood hull, make this kit ideal for the less experienced modeler who wishes to build a model that contains remarkable authenticity and detail. Smuggler’s overall length of 33″ makes for a most impressive model. It is important to note that some pictured items may have been built with optional items not included as part of standard kits, such as pedestals, bases, cases, paint, etc. If there are any questions about the contents of a particular kit, please contact Bluejacket.

About a Gloucester Schooner

The 1877 Gloucester Schooner was primarily used for fishing, specifically for cod, haddock, and halibut. Its sturdy build and spacious deck made it perfect for hauling in large catches of fish. The schooner was also used for transportation, carrying goods such as salt, lumber, and even passengers to various ports along the East Coast. This versatile vessel played a significant role in the economic growth of the region, as it provided a means of livelihood for many fishermen and merchants. The Gloucester Schooner was not only a practical and functional vessel but also a work of art. Its graceful lines and intricate detailing were a reflection of the pride and dedication of the shipbuilders who crafted it. The 1877 Gloucester Schooner was a common sight in the waters of the North Atlantic, and it became a symbol of the thriving fishing industry in Gloucester. Although the age of sail has long passed, the legacy of the Gloucester Schooner lives on, as it continues to be celebrated and honored in the town of Gloucester and beyond. It serves as a reminder of a time when the sea was the main source of livelihood and the Gloucester Schooner was the lifeline of many coastal communities.
