About Spray: KLW201

Spray | First singlehanded circumnavigation Capt. Joshua Slocum’s account of his historic voyage in the Spray, Sailing Spray | First singlehanded circumnavigation. Alone Around The World, is one of the greatest adventure stories of all times. Sailing for 3 years in his rebuilt 100 year old oyster smack, Capt. Slocum’s trip is regarded, even today, as being one of the most outstanding voyages in history.

The Spray is a remarkable vessel that has captured the hearts and imaginations of sailors and adventurers alike. This 36-foot sloop was the brainchild of Captain Joshua Slocum, a seasoned sailor who had a dream to sail around the world on his own. He spent years planning and building the Spray, which he affectionately referred to as his ‘little oyster.’ The ship was designed to be easy to handle and able to withstand the harsh conditions of the open sea.

Due to the complexity of the hull shape and the extra-thick planking, this kit is recommended for modelers with plank on frame experience. Much of the wood is laser cut. All rigging line, Britannia fittings, sailcloth, and display cradle are included. It is important to note that some pictured items may have been built with optional items not included as part of standard kits, such as pedestals, bases, cases, paint, etc.

About The Spray

The Spray was launched in 1893 and set sail on its maiden voyage from Boston, Massachusetts. It was a modest vessel, with a simple design and only one sail. But what it lacked in size and extravagance, it made up for in its seaworthiness and durability. The hull was made of oak and cedar, providing strength and flexibility. The deck was made of teak, known for its resistance to saltwater and durability in harsh weather conditions.

One of the most unique features of the Spray was its innovative self-steering mechanism. Slocum designed a system that allowed the ship to steer itself using a wind vane and a tiller connected to a rudder. This allowed him to take much-needed breaks during his solo journey. It also proved to be a lifesaver during rough weather when Slocum was too exhausted to steer the ship manually.

The interior of the Spray was cozy and compact, with a small cabin that served as Slocum’s living quarters. He had a simple kitchenette, a bunk for sleeping, and a small desk for navigation. The ship was also equipped with a small library of books, including nautical charts and sailing manuals. Slocum’s ingenuity and resourcefulness were evident in every aspect of the ship’s design.

The Spray’s journey was not without its challenges. Slocum faced treacherous storms, equipment failures, and encounters with pirates during his three-year voyage. But the Spray held up remarkably well, proving to be a reliable and seaworthy vessel. Slocum’s incredible journey made him the first person to sail around the world solo, and the Spray became a symbol of courage, determination, and the power of human ingenuity.

Today, the Spray is on permanent display at the Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut, where visitors can marvel at its simple yet remarkable design. Its legacy lives on in the hearts of sailors and adventurers, inspiring future generations to push the limits of what is possible on the open sea. The Spray will forever be remembered as a symbol of adventure, resilience, and the enduring spirit of exploration.
