USS Constitution | “Old Ironsides,” our national treasure. Our kit presents “Old Ironsides” as she appeared during her most glorious years, 1812-1815. Her accuracy is based upon three years of painstaking research by Larry Arnot, reading deck logs and maintenance records.
The USS Constitution, affectionately known as Old Ironsides, is not just a ship, but a symbol of American strength, resilience, and history. Commissioned in 1797, this wooden-hulled frigate is the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world. Its name derives from the belief that the ship’s hull was made of iron due to its incredible strength and ability to withstand cannon fire. This earned Old Ironsides its reputation as an unbeatable and invincible vessel.
But the USS Constitution is more than just a nickname; it is a testament to American ingenuity and craftsmanship. Designed by naval architect Joshua Humphreys, the ship boasted a unique and innovative design that made it superior to other ships of its time. Its hull was made of strong oak and the exterior was coated in copper, making it resistant to rot and marine life. The ship’s three masts and 44 guns were strategically placed to provide maximum firepower and agility in battle.
As an attestation to her authenticity, our kit has been named “The Official Kit of the U.S.S. Constitution Museum.” It contains over 2600 fittings, 20 different sizes of scaled rigging cord, much photo etched brass, and resin deck boats. The carved basswood hull is solid to the gundeck, which leaves two decks to fit out. Some spar deck planking may be left off, so the interior will be open to view. This is a kit for the expert modeler who is looking for a challenge and the opportunity to make history come to life. Optional copperplates available for additional realism. It is important to note that some pictured items may have been built with optional items not included as part of standard kits, such as pedestals, bases, cases, paint, etc. If there are any questions about the contents of a particular kit, please contact Bluejacket.

Old Ironsides quickly gained fame and notoriety in the War of 1812, where it engaged in several victorious battles against the British Navy. One of its most famous victories was against the HMS Guerriere, where the USS Constitution’s cannonballs bounced off the enemy ship’s hull, earning it the nickname ‘Old Ironsides’ from its crew. This battle solidified the ship’s reputation as an unbeatable force and boosted morale for the American people during the war.
But the USS Constitution’s legacy extends beyond its battles and victories. It has also served as a training vessel for thousands of sailors, a goodwill ambassador for the United States, and a floating museum showcasing its rich history. The ship has undergone numerous restorations and repairs throughout its lifetime, but it still retains its original structure and many of its original features, providing a tangible connection to America’s past.
Today, the USS Constitution continues to sail the seas as an active duty ship in the US Navy, making it the world’s oldest actively commissioned naval vessel. It serves as a powerful reminder of America’s naval prowess and its enduring spirit. The ship’s motto ‘Old Ironsides Forever,’ encapsulates its legacy and symbolizes the strength, determination, and perseverance of the American people. The USS Constitution truly embodies the phrase ‘they don’t make them like they used to,’ and will forever hold a special place in the hearts of Americans as a symbol of their country’s proud history and enduring values.
