Maine has a very old tradition of shipbuilding, going back to the 17th century. Bluejacket’s tradition of crafting fine ship models goes back 100+ years, to our founding days. The collective talent of Maine ship crafters and Bluejacket’s research and authenticity make for a winning combination.
Our talented ship crafters will build any vessel-sail, power, ancient, traditional, contemporary, naval, commercial, or pleasure as long as credible information is available or can be obtained, so that a true scale model can be created. Because of our long history and association with the US Navy, Smithsonian, Nautical Research Guild, numerous naval architects, nautical museums, and other repositories of information (such as New York Yacht Club and various universities), Bluejacket has access to a wide array of plans and information not generally available.
All Bluejacket models are built by Bluejacket’s own talented Yankee ship crafters, not in some third world country! In fact, we manufacture in excess of 95% of everything that goes into one of our models. We are proud of the fact that we produce true museum quality models, utilizing the most current techniques and technologies.
Bluejacket is capable of producing any type of ship model, in any reasonable scale. For example, we build our half hull models using the traditional lift methods of carving laminated wood-not a piece of molded plastic. We build both solid hull or planked models, depending upon the scope of the commission. Bluejacket regularly builds admiralty models, as well as models showing interior furniture and details.
Some recently completed examples of custom commissions have been a 7’ oil tanker and a 6 1/2’ tramp steamer (both waterline models), for a West Coast client. The whaleship Charles W. Morgan has been the subject of many kit builders. Our custom model was complete with miniature sperm whale teeth, baleen on deck, and accurately outfitted whaleboats, including both harpoons and lances.
Continuing the tradition started when we were founded in 1905 as the official model maker for the US Navy, we continue to build a great many naval models. The LST pictured is one of eight naval vessels commissioned, and completed, for a Southern gentleman. Bluejacket was very pleased to have built 2 models of the passenger liner Columbia, on which the father of the gentleman in the picture came to the United States from Scotland, in the early 1900’s. The reason for the second model of Columbia is for the twin brother of our client.
Bluejacket’s custom commissions are surprisingly affordable and are delivered within a guaranteed period of time. Please allow us the opportunity of discussing a custom commission with you.
