Belaying Pins

Belaying pins are iconic, slender cylindrical rods, typically crafted from durable hardwood or polished brass, that serve as essential manual fasteners aboard traditional sailing vessels. Historically found inserted into a ship’s pin rail—a sturdy horizontal beam lining the interior bulwarks or surrounding the base of a mast—these pins act as the primary anchor points for the running rigging.

When a sailor needs to secure a line, they wind the rope around the pin in a series of figure-eight turns, relying on the friction of the overlapping coils to hold the immense tension of a sail’s halyard or sheet. Beyond their functional utility, belaying pins are symbols of a bygone era of maritime craftsmanship; their rhythmic arrangement along the rails remains a defining aesthetic of tall ships, offering a tactile connection between the crew and the volatile forces of the wind and sea.
