Chocks are quintessential details that bridge the gap between a static display and a seaworthy vessel. These small, typically U-shaped or elliptical fittings are mounted along the gunwales or railings to serve as guiding fairleads for mooring lines and hawsers.
Whether crafted from photo-etched brass, turned wood, or 3D-printed resin, their primary function is to prevent rope from chafing against the ship’s structure by providing a smooth, curved surface for the lines to pass through. In scale modeling, the precision of a chock-often measuring only a few millimeters-is a testament to the builder’s attention to detail; when properly painted or burnished and lashed with miniature rigging, they provide the essential “lived-in” authenticity that elevates a model from a mere toy to a convincing replica of a working ship.
