Kedge Anchor

A kedge anchor is a type of anchor designed for use in coastal maneuvering and mooring operations. Its primary purpose is to help a ship navigate through tight spaces, such as entering or exiting a harbor, when it may be difficult to maneuver with the main anchors. The anchor is typically lighter and smaller than the primary anchors, but is equipped with a longer ropes (called a kedge line). This allows the anchor to be deployed and retrieved quickly from the bow or the stern of the vessel, enabling the ship to be turned or backed into a desired position.

The kedge anchor excels at exerting a high sideways pulling force, making it well-suited for situations that require a ship to swing its bow or stern in a specific direction. By dropping the kedge on one side of the ship and then pulling it in with a winch or capstan, the vessel can be rotated or directed into a narrower channel. Skilled use of the kedge anchor allows ships to navigate through crowded harbors, handle wind and tidal currents, and even help pull a vessel out of a grounding situation.

In summary, the kedge anchor is a vital tool for any ship’s crew, providing the maneuverability necessary for navigating tight spaces and overcoming challenging environmental conditions. Its ability to exert sideways force and facilitate quick deployments makes it an essential asset for safe and efficient operation in coastal waters.
