HMS Bounty 1:60 Scale (AM1432) Scale: 1:60 Length: 72cm

The HMS Bounty sailing ship is a 3-masted vessel that was originally built in 1784 for the British Royal Navy. It is most famously known for the infamous mutiny that occurred on board in 1789. The ship was designed and built by William Bligh, who was also the captain of the ship during the mutiny. The Bounty was an impressive 91 feet long and 24 feet wide, with a displacement of 215 tons. It was equipped with a variety of cannons, making it a formidable warship.

HMS Bounty, also known as HM Armed Vessel Bounty, was a small merchant vessel that the Royal Navy purchased in 1787 for a botanical mission. The ship was sent to the South Pacific Ocean under the command of William Bligh to acquire breadfruit plants and transport them to the West Indies. That mission was never completed owing to a 1789 mutiny led by acting lieutenant Fletcher Christian, an incident now popularly known as the mutiny on the Bounty. The mutineers later burned Bounty while she was moored at Pitcairn Island. An American adventurer helped land several remains of Bounty in 1957.

Bounty was originally a collier, Bethia, built in 1784 at Blaydes Yard in Hull, Yorkshire in England. The Royal Navy purchased her for £1,950 on 23 May 1787 (equivalent to £222,000 in 2019), refit, and renamed her Bounty. The ship was relatively small at 215 tons, but had three masts and was full-rigged. After conversion for the breadfruit expedition, she was equipped with four 4-pounder (1.8 kg) cannon and ten swivel guns.

About the HMS Bounty

The HMS Bounty was a unique ship in that it was one of the first vessels to be built with a full frame instead of using the traditional method of using only a keel and ribs. This made the ship much stronger and able to withstand rough seas and storms. The ship was also equipped with an innovative rotating capstan, which made it easier to raise and lower the anchor.

The interior of the Bounty was just as impressive as its exterior. It had a spacious cabin for the captain, complete with a dining area, bedroom, and even a private bathroom. The crew quarters were located below the deck and were much smaller, with hammocks for sleeping and a small kitchen area for preparing meals.

The Bounty was primarily used for transporting breadfruit trees from Tahiti to the West Indies, as part of a plan by the British government to grow the trees as a cheap source of food for slaves. However, the voyage took a dramatic turn when a group of crew members, led by Fletcher Christian, mutinied against Captain Bligh. The mutineers set Bligh and 18 loyal crew members adrift in a small boat, while they remained on the Bounty and eventually settled on the island of Pitcairn.

Despite the infamous mutiny, the HMS Bounty continued to sail for many years after. It was eventually rediscovered in 1957 by an American adventurer, and a replica of the ship was built in 1960 for the film ‘Mutiny on the Bounty.’ The replica Bounty was also used for various other historical films and TV shows before tragically sinking in a hurricane in 2012 off the coast of North Carolina.

Today, the legacy of the HMS Bounty lives on, with the original ship’s log and other artifacts displayed in various museums. The ship’s story continues to captivate the public, with numerous books, films, and documentaries being produced about the mutiny and the ship’s history. The HMS Bounty will forever be remembered as a symbol of adventure, bravery, and the power of the sea.
