About Venetian Gondola – Amati

Venetian Gondola, the Jewel of Venice

A Venetian Gondola is a traditional, flat-bottomed boat that has been used as a means of transportation in the city of Venice, Italy for centuries. These iconic boats are a symbol of the city and are often seen gliding through the network of narrow canals, creating a romantic and picturesque scene. The gondola is a long, narrow vessel that is approximately 11 meters in length and 1.4 meters in width. It is handcrafted using a variety of different types of wood, such as oak, cherry, and mahogany, and is constructed using traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations of skilled craftsmen.

Inseparably linked to the city of Venice, of which it is the most famous symbol, the Venetian Gondola is the most famous boat in the world, the most elegant and the most sophisticated and, due to its characteristics of manoeuvrability and speed, it was the Venetian boat best adapted to the transport of persons before the advent of the motorized craft.

The gondola is completely painted in black, a color requested by a decree of the Magistrate of the Pomp (16th century) intended to limit the excessive luxury used by the noble and rich to adorn their own boats.

The Venetian Gondola kit includes wooden hull with laser cut frames, floor and hull planks, photo-etched decorations and stern irons, resin fork, cast metal lantern, and fabric for the seat cushions. Also includes a wooden display stand. Step-by-step instructions and parts list provided in English.

More about a Venetian Gondola

The Venetian gondola is propelled by a single oar, which is controlled by a skilled gondolier who stands at the stern of the boat. The oar is not fixed to the boat, but rather rests in an oarlock, allowing the gondolier to easily maneuver through the winding canals of Venice. The gondolier uses a unique rowing technique known as ‘voga alla veneta,’ which involves standing and rowing in a forward-facing position. This allows for better visibility and control of the boat, as well as providing an impressive display of skill and balance.

The design of the gondola is not just functional, but also carries significant symbolic meaning. The distinctive shape of the boat, with its asymmetrical sides and iron prow, is said to represent the two sides of Venice – the secular and the spiritual. The curved shape of the boat is also thought to resemble the Venetian lagoon, while the six prongs on the iron prow symbolize the six districts of Venice.

The interior of the gondola is equally as impressive as its exterior. The seats are upholstered in luxurious velvet and the cabin is adorned with intricate carvings and decorations. The overall design is a perfect blend of elegance and practicality, as the boat was originally used as a means of transportation for Venetians of all social classes.

Today, the gondola is primarily used for tourism purposes, offering visitors a unique and romantic way to experience the city. Gondola rides are a must-do for tourists in Venice, and many gondoliers are trained to provide a commentary on the city’s history and landmarks as they navigate through the canals. The gentle swaying of the gondola, the soft sound of the oar hitting the water, and the stunning views of the city make for an unforgettable experience.
