HMS Sphinx – 1775
This is Vanguard Models’ latest kit release. This is our most comprehensive design to date, incorporating a vast number of pre-cut and engraved parts spread over 33 sheets of mainly pear wood, with high grade MDF used for the skeleton. The laser-engraved decks are made from maple ply, and we also include ply decks for the forecastle and quarterdeck, in case you want to plank those yourself (planking material not provided for that option). Walnut dowel is provided for masts and yards. It is anticipated that this model, designed for intermediate modellers upwards, will take around 400-800 hrs, as a very average estimate.

All of the areas at and above deck level are pre-cut. Even the main wales are pre-cut.

High resolution 3D-printed 9-pounder cannon barrels (black) along with black acrylic cannon balls
Gun port positions built into frame and inner/outer bulwarks cut to fit those positions.
Double planked hull in limewood for first planking and pear wood for second planking.
All planking above the wales is supplied in pre-cut and engraved sections.

The HMS Sphinx was a majestic and formidable sailing ship that played a significant role in naval history. This three-masted frigate was commissioned by the Royal Navy in 1782 and was primarily used for escorting merchant ships and for reconnaissance missions during the American War of Independence. The Sphinx was designed by John Williams, a renowned naval architect, and was built in Plymouth, England. With a length of 145 feet and a beam of 40 feet, the Sphinx was a formidable vessel that could carry a crew of 284 men.
The design of the Sphinx was revolutionary for its time, with a sleek and streamlined hull that allowed for faster speeds and better maneuverability. It was armed with 28 guns, including 22 twelve-pounders on the upper deck, and six six-pounders on the quarterdeck. This made the Sphinx a formidable opponent in battle, capable of inflicting significant damage on enemy ships. The ship was also equipped with advanced navigation and communication systems, making it a valuable asset for the Royal Navy.
The Sphinx had a long and illustrious career, participating in several key naval battles, including the Battle of the Saintes in 1782 and the Battle of the Chesapeake in 1781. It also played a crucial role in the capture of several French and Spanish ships, contributing to the overall success of the British Navy during the American War of Independence. The Sphinx was also used for diplomatic missions, carrying ambassadors and important officials to various locations.
Despite its impressive track record, the Sphinx faced its fair share of challenges and setbacks. In 1797, the ship was badly damaged in a storm and had to undergo extensive repairs. It was also involved in a mutiny in 1798, with several crew members attempting to take control of the ship. However, the mutiny was quickly suppressed, and the Sphinx continued to serve the Royal Navy with distinction.
In 1804, the Sphinx was sold out of service and used as a prison ship. It was eventually broken up in 1811, marking the end of its remarkable career. However, the legacy of the HMS Sphinx lives on, with its name being used for several other ships in the British Navy, including a modern-day frigate. The Sphinx remains a symbol of British naval power and innovation, and its contribution to the history of sailing ships is truly remarkable.
