About USS Samuel B Roberts: K1033

U.S.S. Samuel B. Roberts, DE413 | Butler-Class Destroyer Escort. On October 25, 1944 the famed Taffy III battle group engaged a superior Japanese force, in the Southern approaches to Leyte Gulf, Philippines. Even though overwhelmingly outgunned and suffering numerous casualties including the Roberts, Hoel, Johnston, and Gambier Bay, Taffy III forced the Japanese vessels to retire in one of the most heroic, modern sea battles.

The USS Samuel B Roberts DE413 was a destroyer escort of the United States Navy that served during World War II. Named after a Navy coxswain who was killed in action during the Battle of Guadalcanal, the ship was commissioned in 1943 and immediately began serving in the Atlantic Theater. Its first major mission was escorting a convoy to Casablanca, Morocco, where it helped protect supply ships from German U-boats.

About the USS Samuel B. Roberts DE413

Throughout the war, the USS Samuel B. Roberts DE413 played a crucial role in protecting convoys and conducting anti-submarine operations. It also participated in the invasion of Sicily and the Battle of Anzio, providing fire support and protection for landing troops. In October 1943, the ship was involved in a collision with another vessel, causing significant damage to its bow. However, the crew worked tirelessly to make repairs and return to duty in just 11 days, earning the nickname ‘The Destroyer Escort that Fought Like a Battleship.’

In April 1944, the USS Samuel B. Roberts DE413 was transferred to the Pacific Theater, where it continued its escort and anti-submarine duties. In October 1944, the ship was assigned to Task Force 77, a group of destroyers tasked with protecting larger ships during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. During this historic battle, the USS Samuel B. Roberts DE413 and its sister ships engaged in a fierce battle with the Japanese fleet, which included battleships and cruisers. Despite being severely outnumbered and outgunned, the ship and its crew fought valiantly, launching torpedoes and firing its guns until it was ultimately hit by enemy fire and forced to abandon ship.

The heroic actions of the USS Samuel B. Roberts DE413 and its crew during the Battle of Leyte Gulf earned them the nickname ‘The Destroyer Escort That Fought Like a Battleship’ once again. The ship’s sacrifice and bravery played a crucial role in the Allied victory, and its crew members were awarded numerous medals and commendations for their actions.

After the war, the USS Samuel B. Roberts DE413 was decommissioned in 1946 and placed in reserve. It was recommissioned in 1951 and served in the Korean War, conducting patrols and providing naval gunfire support. The ship was eventually decommissioned for the final time in 1964 and sold for scrap.

Today, the legacy of the USS Samuel B. Roberts DE413 lives on through the men who served on her and the numerous books and documentaries that have been dedicated to telling their story. The ship’s courageous actions and unwavering determination in the face of overwhelming odds serve as a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of all those who have served in the United States Navy.
