About Grand Banks Dory: KLW102

Grand Banks Dory | A classic work boat. Remember ‘Captains Courageous’? On the tumultuous seas of the Grand Banks off northern New England, hardy cod fishermen set their handlines from these seemingly fragile cockleshells. Returning to the mother schooner each evening, the dories were designed to nest one inside another on deck. Built exactly the same way as the full sized boat – triangular stern, flat bottom, and three garboard strakes.

A Grand Banks Dory boat is a traditional wooden fishing vessel that originated in the coastal regions of New England and Atlantic Canada in the 19th century. These boats were specifically designed for the rough and unpredictable waters of the Grand Banks, a large fishing ground off the coast of Newfoundland. The unique design of the Grand Banks Dory was developed by local fishermen who needed a small, sturdy, and versatile boat that could withstand the harsh conditions of the North Atlantic.

About Grand Banks Dory’s

The most distinctive feature of a Grand Banks Dory is its flat-bottomed hull, which is made of planks of wood that are tightly fitted together using a technique called clinker building. This method of construction creates a strong and durable hull that is able to navigate through rough seas. The flat bottom also allows the boat to easily glide over shallow waters, making it ideal for fishing in the shallows of the Grand Banks.

The boat is typically about 20 feet in length and can hold up to four people, including the captain. It has a wide beam, providing stability and allowing the boat to carry heavy loads. This was important for the fishermen who used these boats to catch and transport large amounts of cod and other fish back to shore. The boat’s shallow draft also made it easy to maneuver in and out of fishing spots, as well as to dock in shallow harbors.

The Grand Banks Dory is a double-ended boat, meaning it has a pointed bow and stern, allowing it to easily change direction without the need for a rudder. This was essential for navigating through the unpredictable and often treacherous waters of the Grand Banks. The boat is also equipped with oars, allowing the fishermen to row if the wind was not in their favor.

One of the most unique and fascinating aspects of a Grand Banks Dory is the way it is launched and retrieved from the water. Unlike most boats, which are launched and retrieved from a dock, a dory is launched directly from the beach. This is achieved by attaching a rope to the bow of the boat and pulling it into the water using a team of horses or oxen. Similarly, the boat is retrieved by pulling it back onto the beach using the same method.

Despite being primarily used for fishing, Grand Banks Dory boats were also commonly used for transportation and rescue missions along the coast. Their sturdy and versatile design made them ideal for navigating through strong currents and rough waters, making them a valuable asset for coastal communities.

Today, Grand Banks Dory boats are still used by fishermen in some coastal regions, although they have largely been replaced by modern, motorized vessels. However, the traditional design and construction of these boats have been preserved and are now appreciated as a part of maritime history. They can often be seen in museums, and some are still used for recreational purposes, providing a glimpse into the past and the rich fishing heritage of the Grand Banks.
